I remember growing up as a child there was a ‘frequent’ discussion in our household regarding the lights, heat, hydro, etc. I am sure this was probably a common discussion in your households as well…. it usually went something like this….
- My Dad: Why is the TV on when there is no one in the room?
- Me: But I am coming right back.
- My Dad: Do you really need to have the lights on when you are watching TV?
- Me: But I am reading.
- My Dad: You are either reading or watching TV… you can’t be doing both.
I am sure you get the gist of the conversation. It usually ended up with me making a remark about “when I get my own house I will have the lights on when I want!”.
Fast forward 35+ years and I finally started to look at my own hydro bill . With all of the smart meter data available I can compare my hydro usage to 33 of my neighbours . Oh My Lord.. It is a small house and 75% of my neighbours use less hydro than I do. I am now on a quest to turn out lights, TV’s etc. when I am not in the room. I now look at my hydro consumption almost every day to make sure I am on track. So… the moral of the story is…. Yes we become our parents.
